What happens when your business energy contract ends

Doing nothing can move you to a different rate. Knowing your dates is the first step.

Business energy contracts run for a fixed term. If nothing is arranged before the term ends, many suppliers move you onto a default or out-of-contract rate, which can be higher than the one you were on.

Three dates to find

  • The contract end date.
  • The notice period, if your contract has one, and how you must give it.
  • Any early-termination charges if you want to leave before the end.

Put the end date in a calendar with a reminder well ahead of it. Terms differ between suppliers and contracts, so check yours, and ask in writing if anything is unclear.
